Carmacks

Carmacks is a small village located on the banks of the Stewart and Yukon Rivers in the Klondike Region of the Yukon Territory, Canada. Pelly Crossing is just up the road on the Klondike Highway.

Both villages, Carmacks and Pelly Crossing, are home to the Northern Tutchone First Nations people. The Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation people live in Carmacks. The Selkirk First Nations people live in Pelly Crossing. The Yukon River, as part of the territorial lands of the First Nations, was once a transportation route for hunting and fishing.

Carmacks was once a destination on the Overland Trail for miners when traveling from Whitehorse to Dawson City. Later.. during the Klondike Gold Rush, Carmacks was a gas station on the Yukon River servicing a fleet of sternwheelers (riverboats).

Today, Carmacks is a recreation launching point and a popular transportation stop for travelers when exploring the Klondike Highway traveling from Whitehorse to Dawson City in the Yukon. Services in Carmacks include a gas station, general store, some accommodations and a campground.

Carmacks is a recreation destination for paddlers and hikers. Tour groups are limited in the area so many of the adventures are self guided. For kayakers and canoe groups the village of Carmacks is a good put in and take out area on the Yukon River for paddlers.

For a self guided sightseeing walking tour in Carmacks there is the Riverfront Boardwalk Trail which follows the river bank of the Yukon River. For the more adventurous hiker there are many hiking and backcountry trails to explore like the 23 kilometre long Coal Mine Lake Trail.

Throughout the area are a few attractions and heritage sites to visit. In Carcross there is the Tage Cho Hudan First Nation Centre. In Pelly Crossing there is the Big Jonathan House. Some of the heritage buildings in Carcross include the Telegraph Station, Walker's Cabin, Joe Britton Cabin, Coal Cars, Carmacks Roadhouse, White Pass & Yukon Route Stable, Hazel Brown Cabin and the Minto Barracks.
