Yukon Fishing

Fishing in the Yukon Territory is a year round activity. However the conditions of fishing change drastically from season to season. In the Yukon there is a summer fishing season and there is an ice fishing season. Both provide an opportunity to catch lake trout, arctic grayling, northern pike, whitefish, burbot and kokanee salmon.

During the summer months fly fishing, shore fishing and trolling are all enjoyed on the lakes and rivers of the Yukon Territory. During the winter months, after the lakes and rivers freeze, huts are erected on the frozen surfaces and ice fishing season begins.

Every community in the Yukon Territory is a fishing destination. Each community enjoys its own unique selection of lakes and rivers. Some lakes and rivers are easily accessed from boat ramps with marinas and piers. Other fishing spots may require hiking a trail portaging a canoe or being flown in by a floatplane.

Yukon fishing charters and guides are located throughout most of the Territory. Some operate as fishing guides providing a boat and fishing experience. Others operate on a bigger scale with fishing resorts providing guides, meals and accommodations. All fishing in the Yukon Territory requires a yukon fishing licence.

There are easy access fishing lakes in Faro like Fisheye Lake. There are lakes which are remote and located at the end of dirt roads like Black Powder Lake and there are lakes at the end of hiking trails like Dickson and Cousins Lakes.

Watson Lake, Lucky Lake, Hour Lake, McKinnon Lake and Liard River are a few of the fishing holes in the Watson Lake, Yukon area.

In Kluane National Park near Haines Junction, Yukon fishing is enjoyed on Kathleen Lake, Kluane Lake, Pine Lake and Dezadeash River. There are hiking trails leading to lakes like Mush, St. Elias and Bates Lakes.

The Silver Trail Region of the Yukon Territory is a lesser known area for fishing with a large selection of fishing destinations. Rivers include Mayo, Moose and McQuesten Rivers. Fishing lakes include Hanson, Halfway, Minto and Mayo Lakes. Salmon fishing is enjoyed on the Stewart River.

The Southern Lakes region holds the largest concentration of lakes and rivers in the Yukon. In the community of Teslin fishing is good in the Teslin, Hall and Squanga Lakes. In the community of Tagish fishing is enjoyed on Marsh, Tagish, Chootla, Crag, Toobally Lakes and 6 Mile River. And near the community of Carcross, which sits on the shores of Bennett Lake, are Tutshi and Nares Lake.

And then there are always the mighty rivers of the Yukon Territory which stretch for hundreds of kilometres across the Yukon Territory. Each of the mighty rivers like the Yukon River, Klondike River, Pelly River, Alsek River, Ogilvie River and the Macmillan River are all fishing rivers of the Yukon.
