Haines Junction, Yukon, Canada

Haines Junction is the largest community located in the Kluane Country region of the Yukon Territory, Canada. The communities of Burwash Landing and Beaver Creek, along with Haines Junction, are the three main communities located in the region. All three are situated on the Alaska Highway. All three are neighbors to the mountain ranges, alpine meadows, crystal clear lakes, glaciers and icefields in the Kluane National Park & Reserve.

The Kluane National Park & Reserve falls within the traditional territories of the Southern Tutchone First Nations which includes the Champagne, Aishihik and Kluane First Nation people. The park is home to Mt. Logan (5959 meters) which is the largest mountain in Canada. And the glaciers and icefields in the park create one of the largest non polar icefields in the world.

Haines junction is on the corner of the Alaska Highway and Haines Highway. It is the main transportation centre in the Kluane region. The community of Haines Junction is a result of the building of the Alaska Highway in 1942. The Haines Highway was built soon later to connect the Yukon with Haines, Alaska, U.S.A.

Haines Junction is also the main commercial centre in the region with a small selection of services important to travelers. Some of the services in the community include accommodations, campgrounds, tours, guides, parks office, museum, general store, gas stations, restaurants, bank, laundromat, post office, internet, regional airport and floatplane base.

Haines Junction is the main centre for Parks Canada and the Kluane National Park & Reserve. Located next to the Kluane Park and situated at the base of the Auriol Mountain Range the community is a main starting part for exploring the surrounding wilderness.

In the summer months paddle destinations for canoeing and kayaking include Kathleen Lake and Pine Lake. Day hikes like the Spruce Beetle and the Dezadeash River Trail are great for family adventures. The Auriol, King's Throne and the Sheep Creek Trail are some of the more difficult day hikes suited for adults.

Then there are the Cottonwood, Slims East, Bullion Plateau and the Mount Decoeli routes. They are just a few of the long haul, multi day backpacking and horseback riding adventures located in the park. The Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers are two of Yukon's best rafting rivers.

Other outdoor activities enjoyed in the region include swimming, fishing, boating, flight seeing, mountain climbing, wildlife watching, mountain biking and bird watching. Flight seeing attractions include the St. Elias Icefields, Mount Logan, the Kaskawalsh and Lowell Glaciers. In the winter dog sledding, cross country skiing, ice fishing, heli skiing and snowmobiling are enjoyed.
