Spruce Beetle Trail

The Spruce Beetle adventure is an interpretive hiking trail located near the community of Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, Canada. The trail is an educational adventure with interpretive signs lining the route detailing the life cycle of the Spruce Beetle and the destruction resulting from their feeding habits on the forests of the Yukon Territory.

The Spruce Beetle Trail is a family friendly hike that is considered easy going. The loop trail explores through a mixed forest leading to a viewing platform looking down over the whole valley. To the left of the platform are views of big sections of forest colored brown from Spruce Beetle infestation.

The loop trail leading to the viewing platform is mostly a dirt trail with some sections of boardwalk. There are a few sections of the route with hills and mush of the dirt trails are lined with exposed tree roots and rocks. There are resting benches located along the trail near the bigger hills.

The Spruce Beetle Trail is a short 2 kilometres long (1.2 miles) and takes about 1/2 an hour to 2 hours to complete. The time spent on the trail depends on the time spent at lookout and the fitness levels of the group. The elevation gain from the trailhead to the viewing platform is 15 metres (50 feet).

The pull out gravel parking lot for the Spruce Beetle Trail is located on the left hand side of the highway when heading south on the Alaska Highway. Pit toilets are located in the parking lot.

How to Get to the Spruce Beetle Trail

Travel to the community of Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, Canada. From the community of Haines Junction travel south for 17 kilometres on the Alaska Highway to the trailhead parking lot.
