Nisutlin River Delta, Yukon, CanadaThe Nisutlin River Delta is a recreation destination located northeast of the village of Teslin, Yukon of the Southern Lakes region of the Yukon Territory, Canada. The area is designated as a National Wildlife Area and is managed by the Tlingit First Nation people of Teslin and the Government of Yukon. The Nisutlin River Delta is 4 kilometres long and is located at the entrance of the Nisutlin River where the river meets Teslin Lake. The Nisutlin River delta is a recreation destination for canoeing, boating birdwatching, wildlife watching and fishing. The delta is a feeding and breeding ground for local and migrating birds, including many species of waterfowl, predator birds and shorebirds. The river delta is one of the most important migratory wetlands in the southern Yukon, Territory. The delta is on the flight path for many migratory birds. The delta attracts large populations of migratory birds especially in the fall season because the water levels are low exposing the delta mud flats providing the birds good access to vegetation for feeding. During the fall migration the bird population soars in the delta. Some of the birds include one of the largest number of breeding pairs of Tundra and Trumpeter Swans and then there are the many ducks, Peregrine Falcons, Short eared Owls, hawks, eagles and geese. The exposed mud flats and the large population of birds attracts predators and other wildlife to the area. Some of the wildlife species visiting the delta include moose, bear, elk, deer, caribou, lynx, wolverine and fox. The best way to view and explore the delta is by canoe or boat. There is a boat launch in the community of Teslin near the bridge for launching your canoe or boat. Most arrive to sightsee, wildlife watch and fish when exploring the Nisutlin River Delta Wildlife Area. Some arrive to fish for salmon, trout and whitefish. A fishing licence is required to fish in the Yukon Territory. How to Get to Nisutlin River DeltaTravel to the community of Teslin at the 804 mile marker (1244 Kms) on the Alaska Highway in the Southern Lakes region of the Yukon, Territory, Canada. In the community, near the big bridge on the Alaska Highway in Teslin is a boat launch for canoes and boats. Delta best viewed by boat and canoe. |
