Watson Lake

Watson Lake is located on the southeastern section of Canada's Yukon Territory. The community is the southern entry point to the Yukon Territory when approaching from the east while exploring the Alaska Highway.

Watson Lake is a commercial and transportation community located on the shoulders of the Alaska Highway. It is the 3rd largest community in the Yukon Territory. It It is a location which sees allot of traffic and therefore has many services important to travelers. There are services available like gas stations, accommodations, campgrounds, restaurants, a bank, a post office, a grocery store, attractions and repair shops.

When in Watson Lake there a some attractions to entertain and some activities to explore. Two of the attractions to visit are the Sign Post Forest and the Northern Lights Centre. The Sign Post Forest, created in the 1940s, is a collection of thousands of signs from around the world. The Northern Lights Centre is an education into the magic of the colorful lights which light up the Yukon skies on occasion.

Watson Lake in the Yukon enjoys a year round tourism season. Winter being longer than summer. In the summer months the main activities enjoyed include fishing, hiking, canoeing, river kayaking, rafting, backpacking and boating.

During the winter months the trails and backcountry roads become snowmobile and cross country ski routes. The frozen lakes become dotted with shacks for ice fishing. And the Mt. Maichen Alpine Area attracts downhill skiers and snowboarders.

There are interesting parks and trails in Watson Lake. In fact, there are over 18+ trails in the community connecting hikers to lakes, rivers and viewpoints. The community lake, Watson Lake, enjoys a great trail network of loop and one way trails.

From the community of Watson Lake travelers can enjoy scenic multi day trips explorng in the Muncho Lake or Stone Mountain Provincial Parks.

The hiking trails and highways in the Watson Lake region create some great opportunities for wildlife watching. There are Black Bears, Moose, Grizzlies, Bald Eagles and many others. Just south of the community is a herd of free range Buffalo. They are not hard to miss. Beware sometimes they even take a nap on the Alaska Highway.
