Section 3 - Alaska Highway

The Alaska Highway is one of the most historic, scenic and globally recognized driving routes when traveling through British Columbia and the Yukon Territory in Canada. The Alaska Hwy route follows a scenic 2,451 kilometre (1523 mi.) highway of paved roads from Mile "0" in Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction, Alaska, U.S.A. It is a famous highway recognized as the "16th Wonder of the Engineered World".

The Alaska Highway is divided into three driving route sections (links to right). Section 1 travels approximately 300 miles from Dawson Creek, BC to Fort Nelson, BC. Section 2 travels 335 miles from Fort Nelson, BC to Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory. Section 3 travels 888 miles from Watson Lake to Whitehorse to Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, Canada and then all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska, USA.

Section 3 of the Alaska Highway begins from Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory, Canada and travels to Teslin of the Southern Lakes region and then to Whitehorse and Haines Junction before the highway leaves the Yukon and enters Alaska, USA.

This section of the Alaska Highway travels around lakes, mountains and along the banks of rivers. Some of the most majestic mountain views are enjoyed along this route. Point of Interest destinations include Mclintock River, Squanga Lake, Teslin River, Canyon Creek, Takhini Valley and Kluane Lake Provincial Park.

Heading west from Watson Lake the first point of interest along this section of the Alaska Highway is located at "Mile 804". At "Mile 804" is the small hamlet of Teslin. There is a restaurant, museum and gas station here. The long bridge over the Teslin River is impressive.

At "Mile 996" is Canyon Creek. It is the sight of one of the original wooden bridges of the Alaska Highway that was replaced in soon later. The bridge still stands and can be accessed on foot for views and photos . Vehicle traffic bypasses the old bridge and now travels on a new modern day bridge.

At "Mile 1016" is Haines Junction, Yukon Territory. This section of the route is covered in monster mountain scenery. Plenty of activities here. On a blue sky day the mountains are so beautiful. It is also home to the Kluane National Park Office and Information.

At "Mile 1061" is Soldier's Summit. There are views and interpretive signs featuring the historic ribbon cutting event opening the highway. The area enjoys an interpretive hiking trail. From mile 1061 to mile 1712 are some great pull outs located along Kluane Lake with sweet lake and mountain views.

At "Mile 1202" is Beaver Creek. The small community is the last part of the Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway. Just ahead is the Canada | USA Border and the state of Alaska, USA.
