Things To Do
Fishing | Ice Fishing: Watson Lake, Lucky Lake, Hour Lake, McKinnon Lake and Liard River are a few of the fishing holes in the Watson Lake area. Fish to catch include Rainbow & Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling, and Northern Pike. Fishing in the Yukon Territory requires a fishing licence. Make it a long day trip and fish the massive Muncho Lake. In the winter the lakes freeze over, ice shacks are erected and holes are drilled for ice fishing. |
Canoeing | Kayaking: There are many lakes and rivers in the region for kayaking and canoeing. Some smaller lakes have roof top boat launches and only permit canoes and kayaks. Larger lakes like Watson Lake and Muncho Lake are popular for boating, canoeing, fishing and water skiing. The rapids of the Liard River are popular for kayaking and river rafting. |
Boating | Water Skiing: In the immediate Watson Lake area the biggest and best lake to boat and water ski is on Watson Lake located north of the community. Make it a long day trip and there is a large lake south of Watson Lake in British Columbia named Muncho Lake. Camping is near by if you want to stay longer. |
Hiking: There are over 70 kilometres of hiking trails in the Watson Lake area. Many are loop trails and complete trail systems with connecting routes. In total there are 18+ hiking trails. The trails connect the community with the lakes, attractions and forests around Watson Lake. |
Birdwatching: The many lakes, the lush boreal forest and local wetland marshes are ideal for local and migrating birds. The region is a breeding and feeding grounds for various birds of the Yukon. Some of the birds to look for include the Great Horned Owl, Bald Eagles, Canada Geese and Mountain Bluebirds. |
Wildlife Watching: The region around Watson Lake is very rural and wild. The forest , lakes and rivers are home to many wildlife. It is very common to view wildlife when hiking or driving the Yukon highways. Just south of the community are a herd of Buffalo. In the forests are Black Bears, Grizzlies, Moose, Wolves and Cougars. |
Sightseeing: The Watson Lake area is very well known to travelers for some very special sightseeing attractions. There is the Sign Post Forest which dates back to the early 1940's and includes thousands of signs including one of our own www.BCeh.com signs. Can you find it? There is the Northern Lights Centre which is an education into the natural light shows and vibrant colors which sometimes decorate the sky. |
Road Trips: Day trips and multi day trips are very possible from Watson Lake. All it takes is a good plan, a vehicle or a bicycle. Three of the road trips in the region to consider include the natural hot springs in the Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park, Muncho Lake Provincial Park and the Stone Mountain Provincial Park. Stay for a few days, bring a camper trailer along and you can explore all three. Just getting there is a wildlife watching tour. |
Cross Country Skiing: Many of the hiking trails and backcountry roads in the Watson Lake area become cross country ski trails in the winter months. There are many frozen lakes plus the 18 trails covering over 70 kilometres for xc skiing in the region. |
Downhill Skiing | Snowboarding: Mt. Maichen is the alpine ski area for Watson Lake attracting downhill skiing and snowboarding crowds. There are 9 groomed runs, rentals, lessons and a chalet lodge. |
Snowmobiling: In the winter months the Watson Lake backcountry roads, lakes and remote hiking trails become snowmobile routes for pleasure and for traveling from point A to pont B in the community. |
