Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

Whitehorse is the capital city of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The community is a major transportation and commercial centre for the Yukon situated on the banks of the Yukon River and the shoulder of the Alaska Highway.

During the Klondike Gold Rush the Yukon River was the transportation route connecting miners with Whitehorse. At one time there were over 250 riverboats working on the Yukon River. Soon later the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway began servicing Whitehorse. Today, the Alaska Highway is the transportation route of modern times.

The downtown core of Whitehorse enjoys both new and older buildings. There are stretches of shops painted in pastel colors. There are heritage buildings and historic artifacts located throughout town like the Whitehorse Train Station, the SS Klondike, the Ernie Tweed House, the Caude Hogg House, the CCC Co. Porter Locomotive and the Whitehorse Trolley.

The main industries in Whitehorse include mining, tourism, transportation and government. The community enjoys many services important to travelers like accommodations, campgrounds, tours, guides, attractions, theatre, museums, restaurants, grocery stores, airport, gas stations, banks, coffee shops, post office, laundromat, floatplane base, marina and internet.

The region is rich in wilderness. There are many lakes, rivers and mountains which create canyons, hot springs and chain of lakes. It is an environment popular for many activities. During the summer some of the more popular activities include canoeing, fishing, golfing, boating, horseback riding, rafting, kayaking, birdwatching, hiking and mountain biking.

During the winter months, after the snow has fallen, the region attracts people to the region for winter adventures. During the snow months, from November to April, some of the winter activities enjoyed include cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and dog sledding.

Whitehorse is very recreation friendly. There are over 800 kilometres of recreation trails in the region. Some trails connect with other trails like the Millennium Trail connects with the Yukon River Loop Trail which connects to Miles Canyon and Canyon City.

There are recreation trails for hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing which visits groups of lakes like the trails exploring Chadden Lake, Chadburn Lake and the Hidden Lakes.

The Yukon River and the Southern Lakes region enjoy a famous canoe route dating back to the early 1900s. Boats and sightseeing tours patrol the waterways of Whitehorse seeking wildlife sightings and historic sites. Fishing boats and fishing guides troll the waterways for trout, arctic grayling, whitefish or salmon.
